Newport News Twilight Criterium

THR Cycling and the City of Newport News are pleased to announce the Newport News Twilight Criterium on Saturday, July 30th. This 1km, 8 turn course with a short uphill and fast downhill located in the revitalized downtown Newport News area is sure to challenge beginners and pros alike. The women’s and Men’s 1/2/3 will begin at dusk with the men’s race finishing at night under the city lights. Large cash payouts are on offer with sizable mid race primes available in the Men’s and Women’s 1/2/3, Men’s Cat 3, and Men’s Masters fields.

Course: A technical, but wide, 1km, 8 turn course with a short uphill and fast downhill located in downtown Newport News. The start/finish line is approximately 115 meters from the final turn.

Registration: Online registration closes at 12PM (noon) on Friday, July 29th. Entry fees are $30 until 6/29/22, $35 until 7/24/22, and $40 after 7/25/22. Day-of registration opens at 2:00PM and is available for $40. A second race is $20 less than the first race entry fee. Entry fees include $5.05 USAC fee. If the event has to be cancelled, partial refunds will be issued for the registration fee minus any fees that bikereg charged during registration and any pre-race fees owed to the city of Newport News. The event needs a minimum of 200 riders registered by July 25th, or it could face cancellation.

License: Beginner One-day and Annual licenses will be available for purchase on race day. Experienced riders must renew their annual license or purchase a one-day license online. Race Licenses from other countries will not be accepted. Please ensure that you have a USA Cycling License

Rules: All USAC rules apply. ANSI Z90.4 approved helmets are required to be worn whenever riding on or near the race course. No aero bars permitted in mass start races. No Cat 5(Novice) riders permitted in Masters races. Events held rain or shine, however the race directors and officials reserve the right to cancel the event in the case of severe weather as deemed necessary for safety.

Payouts: Full cash payouts for Men’s and Women’s Pro/1/2/3 fields are based on 30 pre-registered riders. If field size is between 16-29 riders than the max payout will decrease to $1,500 for top 10, for fields with 15 or less riders the max payout is $1,000 for top 5.
