Buffalo River Gravel Gran Fondo
Buffalo River Gran Fondo is a fully supported mixed surface event with two routes starting and finishing at Buffalo Lake located near the quaint town of Amherst, VA.
The Big Buffalo 108 miles, a backcountry sufferfest with over 13,000 feet of climbing and 75% on gravel. This one’s not for the faint of heart. The 68 mile route will consist of approximately 65% gravel and 35% paved roads while the 32.2 mile route consist of 35% gravel and 65% pavement. Along the course there will be 3 staffed rest stations for the 68 mile ride and 2 rest stations for the 32.2 mile route, plenty course markings/signage and a sag vehicle for mechanical assistance. Remember this is a ride not a race, everyone is encouraged to have a good time and cheer other riders on during the event.
The weekend will get started with check-in on the Friday the 4th in the afternoon at Buffalo Lake with live music, dinner available for purchase, and lawn games. Camping will be encouraged for all riders and families. Campsites will now offer water and electricity, along with access to full-service bathrooms.
A pre-ride briefing along with light breakfast and coffee will start off Saturday morning at 8:00 am with the long ride beginning at 9:30 am and the short ride at 10:30 am. After the ride, all riders will be provided with a meal and a beer along with commemorative swag. There will be additional food and drinks available to purchase for your loved ones.
This isn’t a race but for those who enjoy a little spirited competition among friends, there will be 3 King/Queen of Mountains segments placed throughout the route. There will be signs on the route indicating the start and finish of each segment (2 climbs and a sprint). You will need to be on Strava (it’s free) and will need to join the rides’ Strava club — Again make sure to join the club to be eligible for awards.
