Cyclocross

Cyclocross (CX) combines multiple athletic endeavors, namely riding and running, with a strong emphasis on skillful bike handling. Compared with other forms of bicycle racing, cyclocross tactics are fairly straightforward; the emphasis is more on the rider’s aerobic endurance and bike-handling skills.

In Virginia, the cyclocross season runs from September to December. Most races are held on 1km to 3km courses that mix blacktop, sand, dirt, mud, run-ups, and sometimes steps. Races typically last between 30 minutes and an hour. CX events are held for men, women, and youth and are categorized by age and experience: Juniors (15- to 18-year-olds), Pro 1/2/3, and Masters (35, 40, 50, and 60+).

Cyclocross races are also known for their fun atmosphere, and many people bring their whole families along. Spectators line the course, cheering and ringing cowbells, making it a festive atmosphere. The pace of the event, obstacles, climate, and technical aspects of the course weed out the weak and make for a good show.
